KIDS’ NIGHT--2006

Our club held its annual model airplane flying event for children this year on June 13 (next one is scheduled for August 22).  This is the sixth year that this fun and educational activity has been held and the second time that two have been scheduled.

In addition to experiencing radio control flying the children are given the opportunity at control-line flying.  Our resident control-line leader, Frank Carlisle, introduced this phase of model aviation to the children.  In addition to the thrill of flying the planes the children also benefited from the educational opportunity of learning about the theory of flight and how a real airplane is maneuvered.

The kids participating were neglected and abused children from various shelter homes in the area including some of our members sponsored children.  Over 29 children participated this year.

Prior to the flying sessions Russell Hope and Chuck Fleming conducted  a “ground school” and demonstrate how the transmitter controls the airplane.  Buddy-boxes were used during the actual flying.

During the event the children, along with their accompanying adults, were served hot dogs, chips, and pop.  Each child also received a balsa glider and was awarded a certificate recognizing their first flight accomplishment.
